Bathrooms are becoming more of a fixture in homes than ever before. Recent remodeling trends indicate that bathrooms and kitchens are the most remodeled rooms in the home. If a full remodel job isn't in the budget, a bathroom can be easily rejuvenated with the addition of wooden bath mats. Wooden bath mats are a relatively inexpensive way to bring in durable and beautiful bathroom accessories into any bathroom design.

Wood bath mats provide protection for the floor and the feet that come out of the bath or shower. Bath mats traditionally served the purpose of keeping a floor from getting wet, but are now part of the whole bathroom design. Wooden bath mats, specifically teak bath mats, were previously seen only on boats, but have found a place in the household bathrooms.

Teak bath mats have become popular because of their beauty and durability. Teak is a type of wood that thrives in the monsoon climates of Asia. Renowned for the ability to be water resistant and durable, teak is one of the most popular wood choices for outdoor furniture and boat decks. But it also sought after for interiors, and is commonly used for flooring and veneers for furniture. Water slips off of teak bath mats through the teak slats, providing a safe, dry surface to rest toes. The water then naturally dries on the floor beneath the wood bath mat, leaving a bacteria free bathroom.

Teak bath mats and bath mats made of pine or composite can last much longer than a bath mat made of wool or other fibers. Teak bath mats are easy to maintain, they just require hosing off and an occasional treatment with deck or bleach cleaning solution. Teak bath mats will not rot, which means they won't retain the moisture and smell, as fiber bath mats have the tendency to do. While all types wooden bath mats are popular, teak bath mats are the most widely available and most popular because of teak's natural ability to be water and mildew resistant.

Teak bath mats are sold in many stores. Vivaterra offers teak bath mats for around $70.  Mister Board Walk offers wooden bath mats in pine, teak, or plastic and wood composite starting at $48 for a 23x23 bath mats. Brookstone's teak bath mat measures 24x18 and retails for $100, and Land's End has a 27x14 version for $90. Impressions in Decor offers small, medium, large, and extra large teak bath mats starting at $50.

Other types of wood bath mats include Ipe and western red cedar bath mats. Impressions in Decor offers Ipe, their most durable wood, in bath mats. Ipe is dark brown in color and gives an elegant look to any bathroom. Available in small, medium, large, and extra large, these wood bath mats start at $50 and are comparable in price to their teak counterparts. Western red cedar, Impressions in Decor's most economical wood bath mats, will vary in color from a honey brown to a darker caramel. These mats are considerably less expensive as the available sizes increase. A small one starts at $35, a medium is $45, and a large is $60.

The initial investment for wood and teak bath mats may seem steep, but when wood and teak bath mats last for years longer than their carpet-like counterparts, the savings become apparent. After overcoming the sticker shock, the only thing left to do is enjoy the warmth, durability, and beauty that wood and teak bath mats can provide.
